Nervous System health is an essential foundation to living a life that you can successfully navigate regardless of the challenges you must overcome. When you have an unhealthy and unresilient nervous system, facing life's challenges is like trying to carry a giant boulder; it feels impossible, like you simply can not take one more step, and helplessness takes over. When you have a resilient nervous system, it feels more like you are carrying a heavy bag of rocks when challenges show up. It is unpleasant, you would rather put them down, but you can carry them. You have the strength to carry those rocks as far as you need to. You feel capable to move through the struggle When we are resilient, our systems are self-regulatory. The term Self-Regulation means 'control [of oneself] by oneself'. Without the ability to self-regulate we spend much of our lives reacting instead of responding. Without control, there is no choice, only consequence.
The first step in building our nervous system resilience is education; an understanding of how our bodies respond to stress and overwhelm and how that in turn, affects our thinking and our behaviour. Once we understand the science, we are then ready to learn and practice tools of self-regulation in our daily lives to begin the process of re-teaching our nervous system what it is inherently meant to do. Overtime, with purposeful use of self-regulatory tools, our nervous system resiliency increases and the ability of our systems to organically self-regulate begins to return. Often, due to our past, to fully develop a full range of resiliency and our inherent self-regulatory process, deeper accumulated stress and trauma must be worked with and renegotiated; however, the workshops below will get you started on this journey. It starts with education and simple tools of self-regulation that can be used daily and that build the foundations for nervous system health and greater resilience in your lives.
